Baloch and his dedicated team hauled in a rare species of fish known as “Sowa” or the golden fish from the depths of the Arabian Sea, leading to an auction at the Karachi harbor that yielded an astonishing 70 million rupees on a Friday morning, as reported by Mubarak Khan of the Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum.
The Sowa fish, distinguished for its medicinal properties, proved to be a lucrative catch for Baloch.
Extracts from its belly are believed to possess potent healing qualities, and a delicate thread-like substance found in the fish is employed in surgical procedures.
Remarkably, each individual fish fetched an impressive sum of approximately 7 million rupees during the auction, according to Baloch.
Weighing between 20 to 40 kilograms and boasting lengths of up to 1.5 meters, the Sowa fish is highly coveted in East Asian countries.
Beyond its commercial value, the species holds cultural and traditional significance, featuring prominently in both local medicinal practices and cuisine.
Haji Baloch, reflecting on the unexpected windfall, shared that the discovery of this substantial cache of golden fish occurred during a routine fishing expedition in the open waters off the coast of Karachi.
Expressing gratitude for the unexpected bounty, Baloch announced plans to distribute the considerable proceeds among his dedicated crew of seven individuals.
Notably, the Sowa fish tends to venture close to the coast exclusively during the breeding season, adding an element of rarity to this extraordinary catch.
