Eid al-Adha “Feast of the Sacrifice” or the Feast of Sacrifice is the second and the larger of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam (the other being Eid al-Fitr). It honors the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Ismail) as an act of obedience to God’s command.
However, before Abraham could sacrifice his son in God’s name, God presented him with a lamb to slay in his son’s stead because of his desire to do so.
Animals are ritually sacrificed to commemorate this intervention. The family that offers the animal consumes some of the meat, while the remainder is handed to the poor and needy.
Sweets and presents are usually exchanged, and extended family members are usually welcomed. The day is also known as the Greater Eid.
